Journalism by Fiona Ross

As well as working as a Jazz artist, Fiona spends her time behind the scenes in Jazz working as the founder of Women in Jazz Media, senior writer for Jazz in Europe and writing for publications including Kind of Jazz, Jazz North, The Jazz UK and Connects Music. Fiona was the guest editor in chief for the January 2021 edition of Jazz Quarterly, where she was responsible for a rarely seen fully diverse and gender balanced Jazz publication.

Fiona has interviewed an impressive list of inspirational artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Regina Carter, Brandee Younger, Jazzmeia Horn,Steve Gadd, Michel Camilo, Kyle Eastwood, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Maxine Gordon, Terri Lyne Carrington, Barbara Thompson OBE, Ruby Turner, Hiromi, Camille Thurman, Celine Peterson, Jordannah Elizabeth and Dr Tammy Kernodle.

As founder of the ground breaking award winning organisation, Women in Jazz Media, Fiona has developed many exciting initiatives including a mentoring scheme for new female writers, the 'On The Bookcase' series, a range of podcast series and is the Editor in Chief of the acclaimed Women in Jazz Media magazine giving platforms to women working in Jazz across the world. Through Women in Jazz Media, Fiona collaborates with many official partners including Black Lives in Music and Céline Peterson and her work with these partners has led to an increase in the gender and diversity balance in several publications across the world.

Fiona launched her podcast series 'Thoughts, Conversations and To Do Lists' in 2023 inspired by her last album title and was nominated for 'Best Podcast' by the World Entertainment Awards. Fiona explains that 'Every podcast guest is someone who inspires me and who I have previously had a wonderful conversation with'. With no theme, the field is open for a wide range of fascinating conversations! This podcast series has recently been rated on FeedSpot as number 8 in the Top 60 UK Music Podcasts on the web.
